The Crusades
In the early Middle Ages few people traveled far from home. Most people spent most of their lives in a single village or farm. As time passed, however, Europeans learned of other people and places. Their contacts with some of these people were peaceful. With others, though, the contact was not peaceful. Many wars broke out. The most famous of these were religious wars called the Crusades.

Political and Social Change
Beginning with William the Conqueror, the kings of England fought to increase their power. By the 1200s, the kings felt that they could do as they pleased , whether their nobles agreed with them or not. The kings' attitudes upset many nobles, especially when kings began to create new taxes or take the nobles' property. Some nobles began to look for ways to limit kings' powers and protect their own rights.

The Black Death
In the mid-14th century the plague spread around the world from China to Europe. Known today as the Black Death, it was responsible for the deaths of approximately one-third of the population of Europe and the Middle East. |
